Franklin County SWMA Searches for New Executive Director

(MALONE, NY) – The Franklin County Solid Waste Management Authority board is taking applications for the position of executive director for the SWMA. Current executive director George Eades will retire April 1. Eades has been executive director since 1999. .

Winter Weather Advisory

(TUPPER LAKE, NY) – A Winter Weather advisory is in effect thru NOON today. Snow and sleet are in the forecast. Accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch are possible today. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

NY Flu Cases Spike

(Albany, NY) — The number of flu cases is rising across New York. Officials say so far this season, 54-hundred people have been infected with the virus statewide. That’s a 72 percent spike in just the last week. Doctors say it’s important people six months of age or older get vaccinated. They’re also urging people to practice good hygiene to keep germs from spreading.

Volunteer Fire Crews Respond to Haze at Aldi Store

(SARANAC LAKE, NY) — Saranac Lake volunteer fire crews were called to the Aldi Grocery Store on Lake Flower Avenue Wednesday to deal with a malfunctioning ventilator caused a haze of Freon to spread thru the store.The store had already been evacuated by the time firefighters arrived. The leak was traced to a “leaking line in (a) roof ventilator system. Crews today work to fix it.

New Year’s Crackdown on DUI

(Albany, NY) — Christmas may be over, but the holiday season crackdown on drunk drivers continues. Governor Cuomo says there will still be increased State Police patrols on New York roads through Tuesday. Drivers can expect to see more troopers and sobriety checkpoints during their travels. Last year’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign led to 40-thousand tickets being issued.

NY Minimum Wage Set to go Up

(Albany, NY) — Minimum wage workers will soon be seeing their paychecks rise. Effective December 31st, the minimum wage upstate will rise to eleven dollars and ten cents an hour. Governor Cuomo is also launching a wage theft hotline for workers to call if they feel their employer is not complying. Many restaurants and business owners say they’re against the increase because it hurts their bottom line.

Saranac Lake’s Trudeau Building Set for Major Rehab Project

(SARANAC LAKE, NY) – Historic Saranac Lake has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the State office of of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation to support the purchase and rehabilitation of the Trudeau Building. Plans are in the works to restore the former home and medical office of Dr. E. L. Trudeau and open the building as a museum that explores the story of Saranac Lake and Trudeau’s pioneering work in tuberculosis treatment.

Their “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign continues through January 1st. Drivers can expect to see increased patrols and more sobriety checkpoints. Last year, State Police issued more than 40-thousand tickets during this same campaign.

Construction Related Lane Closures Suspended for the Holidays

(Albany, NY) — Getting to your holiday destination may be a bit quicker than usual. Governor Cuomo has announced the suspension of construction-related lane closures across New York State. They’ll remain suspended until six Wednesday morning. Officials are also urging people to take constant breaks while behind the wheel.
